The INDMET Summer Workshop on 3D Modeling and Simulation-Based Product Development, held from July 16 to 21, 2025, at Wollega University Institute of Technology, has concluded successfully. This workshop, organized by the INDMET Project Office and supported by Norway Grants through the NORHED II program, brought together participants from TVET institutions and industry, offering a rich platform for practical training, knowledge exchange, and academic-industry collaboration.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in hands-on sessions and in-depth technical discussions led by experienced trainers and experts. The workshop began with a training by Prof. Hirpha G. Lemu on “3D Modeling and Product Development,” where he introduced modern tools and methodologies in product design and simulation. His session was preceded by an overview of the INDMET Project, highlighting its focus on strengthening the institutional capacity of partner institutions to improve the quality of engineering education and technical and vocational training—especially in the national priority area of manufacturing.

Dr. Naol Desalegn facilitated two insightful sessions: “Overview of Rapid Prototyping” and “Computer-Aided Design (CAD)”, offering a strong conceptual and practical foundation in product development workflows. Dr. Endalkachew Mosisa, INDMET Project Coordinator at Wollega University, delivered training on “Fundamentals of CNC Programming and Operation”, providing a comprehensive overview of automated machining systems. He also co-facilitated, alongside Mr. Robsan Abebe, a highly practical session on “CNC Milling and 3D Printing.”

In addition to technical sessions, Dr. Ginbar Ensermu offered a thoughtful presentation on “University-Industry Collaboration,” where he highlighted the role of effective partnerships in enhancing innovation, workforce readiness, and mutual growth.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants expressed their appreciation for the well-organized and impactful training. In their reflections, they commended the coordinators, organizers, and trainers for their commitment and professionalism. Many acknowledged the practical nature of the workshop and provided constructive feedback, emphasizing how the hands-on approach deepened their understanding and confidence in applying the concepts in real-world settings.

The workshop officially closed with remarks from Dr. Melka Hika, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Wollega University. In his closing speech, Dr. Melka extended his sincere thanks to the INDMET Project Coordinator, Dr. Endalkachew Mosisa, the Institute of Technology, and all members of the organizing and facilitation team for their exceptional work. He also acknowledged and congratulated the trainees for their active participation and dedication throughout the week.

Dr. Melka further reflected on the Ministry of Education’s current reform agenda, particularly the growing emphasis on strengthening University-Industry Linkage and the vision for transforming universities into institutions of Applied Science. He underscored the importance of practical implementation, urging all trainees to take the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop and integrate them meaningfully into their professional practice.

As the INDMET Summer Workshop concludes, it leaves behind a strong sense of accomplishment, renewed collaboration, and a shared commitment to advancing engineering education and industrial capability in Ethiopia. The workshop stands as another milestone in Wollega University’s ongoing journey toward educational excellence, applied learning, and national development through strategic partnerships. We thank all facilitators, participants, and partners who made this event a success.
