The INDMET Summer Workshop on 3D Modeling and Simulation-Based Product Development officially started today, July 16, 2025, at Wollega University Institute of Technology. Organized in collaboration with the INDMET Project Office and supported by Norway Grants through the NORHED II program, this workshop brings together TVET teachers and industry engineers for a week-long, hands-on training and knowledge exchange. The Workshop is designed to foster practical skills in engineering design, product development, and simulation techniques-key competencies for bridging the gap between education and industry.
The opening of the workshop was marked by a warm welcome from Dr. Tamiru Olana, Director of University-Industry Linkage at Wollega University. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and industry players to drive meaningful development. Following this, the official opening speech was delivered by Dr. Diriba Diba, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer. In his address, Dr. Diriba expressed deep appreciation for Professor Hirpa G. Lemu, Dr Endalkachew Mosisa and acknowledged their instrumental roles in realizing the objectives of the INDMET project. He also highlighted how INDMET has created lasting value for the university community, benefiting not only students and faculty in mechanical engineering but also external stakeholders in TVET and industry sectors. According to Dr. Diriba, the project’s alignment with Ethiopia’s national focus on manufacturing underscores its strategic importance and long-term impact.
After the opening, the day’s training session began with an engaging session led by Prof. Hirpa G. Lemu. Before proceeding to the practical aspects of 3D modeling, Prof. Hirpha provided participants with an insightful introduction to the INDMET Project. He elaborated on the project’s key goals, which include improving the quality of education in design and manufacturing engineering, promoting research and innovation, and enhancing collaboration among universities, TVETs, and industry partners. He also outlined the specific interventions and outcomes expected from the project, including curriculum development, capacity building, and institutional strengthening. The training that followed focused on cutting-edge tools and techniques for 3D modeling and product development, setting the tone for a week filled with active learning and professional growth.
The workshop will continue through July 21, featuring multiple sessions facilitated by different trainers. Participants will engage in practical exercises, discussions, and demonstrations aimed at building their technical competence and teaching capacity. The event is expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing efforts of Wollega University and its partners to advance engineering education and respond to the evolving needs of Ethiopia’s manufacturing sector.
This workshop marks another important milestone in Wollega University’s journey toward excellence in applied sciences and engineering. It reflects the growing importance of university-industry-TVET collaboration in shaping a workforce that is ready for the future of manufacturing and innovation.
