Pedagogical Skills Training Underway at the College of Engineering and Technology

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen teaching methodologies and foster problem-based learning within Wallaga University, the INDMET project organized a Pedagogical Skills Training for faculty members in the College of Engineering and Technology. This initiative aims to equip instructors with advanced pedagogical tools that will enrich student engagement and learning outcomes.

The training began this morning, October 30, 2024, with a comprehensive agenda scheduled to run until November 1, 2024. The program commenced with an opening speech by Dr. Thomas Ayana, Wallaga University’s Academic Affairs Director, who emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence in education. Dr. Thomas highlighted the training’s objectives, emphasizing the role of problem-based learning in fostering critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills among students.

Following the opening remarks, Dr. Ginbar Ensermu, Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology, provided key directives for the training, outlining the expectations and the impact the initiative is projected to have on teaching quality. Dr Endalkachew Mosisa, INDMET project leader, shares the experience of UiS on applying problem based learning approaches for better learning and creativity.    

Today’s training sessions were led by Dr. Yemane and Dr. Lelisa, who divided participants into two groups to facilitate a hands-on learning approach. The interactive format allowed instructors to engage directly with problem-based learning techniques and share experiences on implementing pedagogical strategies within their respective departments.

This training underscores Wallaga University’s commitment to educational advancement and is a valuable opportunity for instructors to refine their teaching skills, ultimately enhancing the learning experience for all students. The training sessions will continue through November 1, with further practical exercises designed to deepen participants’ understanding of problem-based learning. Outcomes and feedback from these sessions will be gathered to inform future initiatives and continuous professional development for faculty members.
